David L. Swanson Professor of Communication & Director of Graduate Studies
ICA Fellow
Travis L. Dixon is the David L. Swanson Professor of Communication and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is one of the most widely cited and recognized scholars working at the intersection of media studies, race, and communication theory in the United States today.
For over two decades, Prof. Dixon has studied how racial stereotypes are produced and reproduced in mass media — and, critically, how those stereotypes shape the way audiences perceive race, crime, justice, and public policy. His longitudinal content analyses of television news have become landmark studies in the field.
In 2019, Prof. Dixon made history as the first African American scholar inducted as a Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA), the highest honor the communication discipline can bestow.
Prof. Dixon's scholarly work spans content analysis, experimental methods, and longitudinal survey research across traditional and digital media environments.
Systematic content analyses of how racial groups are framed in television news, social media, entertainment, and online platforms — including longitudinal tracking of trends over decades.
Experimental and survey research examining how consuming stereotypical or counter-stereotypical media content shifts public attitudes toward race, crime, welfare, and policing policy.
News framing analysis of police use of force, community relations, and how media coverage shapes public support for or opposition to criminal justice reform.
Emerging work on how algorithmic curation, social platforms, and online news ecosystems amplify or challenge racial stereotypes in the contemporary media environment.
Studies of how rap music and its audiences are perceived — and how race mediates those perceptions in ways that mirror broader media bias patterns.
Research on how Black families are systematically misrepresented in welfare and policy news coverage, influencing public opinion on social programs.
